Transportation
HIGHWAYS
Florence Township offers
a small town atmosphere, but also provides easy access to major thoroughfares
along the East coast including:
- New Jersey Turnpike
- Pennsylvania Turnpike
- Route 130
- Route 295
Florence Township is also
a stones throw to several other major highways, including:
- Route 206
- Route 1
- Interstate 95
- Route 13 (Pennsylvania)
SHIPPING
Shipping and freight rail
service is also readily available. A heavy rail line runs north-south
through Florence Township, and the Delaware River, with a deep-water
channel, marks our western border.
COMMUTING
New Jersey Transit operates
an extensive bus service in Florence Township connecting commuters to
the many metropolitan areas in the greater Delaware Valley.
New Jersey Transit is also
developing commuter train service. The Southern New Jersey Light Rail
Transit System (SNJLRTS) is a 34-mile passenger light rail line that
will link Trenton to Camden. Two train stations will be located in Florence
Township. The Hornberger Avenue gate area of the former John A. Roebling
& Sons Company will host a train station and parking facility. This
station will prove beneficial to the hundreds of employees projected
to work in and around the former mill site once it is redeveloped under
current initiatives. A second train station will be constructed just
off Route 130 near the entrance to Whitesell Corporation's Haines Industrial
Center. The Haines Center is an over 600 acre facility that will ultimately
house several million square feet of industrial, commercial, warehouse,
office, manufacturing, and distribution operations.
With 20 station stops serving
communities along the Delaware River's Route 130 corridor, light rail
system will connect riders to the larger transportation networks of
New Jersey, Amtrak, PATCO and SEPTA. As the largest public transit investment
of state dollars in recent memory, this project will include significant
infrastructure improvements throughout the 34-mile corridor. More than
50 grade crossings will be upgraded and 17 bridges will be repaired
or rebuilt. As a diesel light rail system, the SNJLRTS's trains will
not only meet and exceed federal air quality standards; they will operate
quieter than commuter trains and even buses. The vehicles and stations
will be fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and
will be part of a barrier-free system that will make it easy to purchase
tickets and to travel.
Some of the major destinations
along the SNJLRTS include:
- The State Aquarium -
Camden
- The Tweeter Entertainment Center - Camden
- Rutgers University - Camden
- Walter Rand Transportation Center - Camden
- Trenton Arena - Trenton
- The Northeast Corridor Rail Station - Trenton
In addition to the destinations
listed above, the SNJLRTS connect riders with employment, educational
and recreational opportunities all along the waterfront. A one-mile
extension of the system along Trenton's State Street to the Capitol
District is under review and, if constructed, will offer riders additional
options.
